Frederick Ferdinand Schafer Painting Catalog

Problematic painting record FFSp0656

[photo] [Mountain landscape]
Photo credit: William K. Dick, 1971
Size: 8 x 16 in (20 x 41 cm)
Inscription: l/l, on a rock, said to be "FS 06" (mostly illegible in reproduction)
Provenance: With Jim Finlinson Antiques, Berkeley, California, August 1971.
Reproductions: William K. Dick photo #177 (color, August 1971)
Attribution: The signature "F.S." suggests that the painting is not by Frederick Schafer. (See the discussion at Signatures with initials only.) The painting has a uniform level of detail throughout, the lake has mirror images, and the composition does not have a central focus, all of which characteristics are unusual for works by Schafer. A note on the back of the William K. Dick photo says "Schafer?/Swanville?" The painting may be by Fred Swanwell.
Description: A snow-capped twin-peaked mountain stands in the rear, with a hillside in front of it to the left, foothills below to the right, and a small lake in the middle. The lake reflects a mirror image of trees on the far side. On the near bank of the lake, in the midground left, is a grove of trees standing in shadow; in the foreground a bright white rock formation catches the sun as it slopes up to the right. Brown brush grows atop the rock at the right edge. (From a color photograph.)
Identification: Assigned, descriptive title.
