| Site: | Castle Rock is located on the Columbia River, east of Portland, Oregon. |
| Description: | The painting shows the riverbank lower right with a group of tall evergreens. In the lower right middle is the large rectangular Castle Rock backlighted by a pink sunset sky reflected on the River to the left. (Description from the collector, October 1998.) |
| Note: | Lewis and Clark named the geographic feature in the painting "Beacon Rock" but at one time it was also called "Castle Rock" [Edmond C. Meany, Origins of Washington Geographic Names, page 40]. |
| Identification: | The Victoria Times on 9 October 1909 carried an advertisement by an Unidentified auctioneer for a Mrs. Erb at 2641 Douglas Street, which lists 7 or 8 Schafer oil paintings, including a Castle Rock. It is possible that that is this painting. |
