Nineteenth-Century Auctioneers and Sales
In contrast with the citations listed earlier, every pre-20th century auction that is known to have contained paintings by Schafer is listed here, whether or not it is cited in the text of the catalog. Many of these sales are known only by a newspaper advertisement. Although some of these advertisements advise that a catalog is available, very few of those catalogs have been located; some of those reported located in the 1970's have since been lost. None of these catalogs are located in Ellen Halteman Schwartz, Nineteenth Century San Francisco Art Exhibition Catalogs.
Note that the San Francisco addresses given here pre-date the 1906 earthquake and fire.

- 16 November 1881, at 230 Sutter Street (YMCA building). 100 paintings, many artists, catalog [unlocated]. From advertisement in San Francisco Chronicle XXXIV, 124, page 4 column 9, 16 November 1881.
- 15 July 1882, at 624 Market Street, San Francisco. Paintings by Holdredge, von Perbandt, and Schafer. From advertisement in San Francisco Chronicle XXXV, 180, page 4 column 9, 15 July 1882.
- 29 July 1882, at 624 Market Street, San Francisco. Many artists. From advertisement in San Francisco Chronicle XXXVI, 13, 28 July 1882. (Advertisement suggests that contents may be unsold lots from the 15 July 1882 sale.)
- 10 November 1884 to 12 November 1884, at Irving Hall, 139 Post Street, San Francisco. 200 paintings, many artists. From advertisement in San Francisco Chronicle XL, 118, page 2 column 7, 10 November 1884.

There is said to be a catalog [not seen]. William K. Dick reports finding the catalog at the The Society of California Pioneers, but Patricia Trenton and Peter H. Hassrick, The Rocky Mountains, reported in 1983 that it has since been lost. A 1991 search of the The Society of California Pioneers archives again failed to locate it.
