The Santa Cruz Mountains are the coastal range that separates southern San Francisco Bay and San Jose from the Ocean. They contain redwood forests and mountain streams that were frequent subjects of paintings by Schafer. A majority of these paintings are in the region between San Jose and Santa Cruz, near Felton, California. In addition to the paintings listed here, whose titles specifically place them in that locale, it seems likely that some of the other paintings of mountain streams through a forest or of redwoods are also from this same area.
