Only a handful of watercolors by Schafer are known. Several are dated, and the dates are quite late--1898 and later. Some of the undated watercolors appear to be of German scenes, which are likely to have been painted before Schafer's 1874 arrival in the United States. Thus it appears that he used watercolor both early and late in his career, but relatively little when he was painting the most.
