A British or European artist who signs "F. Schaefer"

An oil painting that emerged in the British Midlands bears the signature "F. Schaefer" in a partly connected script hand that is unlike the examples of script hand that have been attributed to Frederick F. Schafer. The subject matter is typical for Frederick F. Schafer, but the style is quite different—impressionist, using strokes of raw color, and almost as if the artist were trying to imitate the style of Vincent Van Gogh.

Nothing has been discovered about this other F. Schaefer. Since nothing is known of Frederick F. Schafer's work in Germany before he emigrated to the United States, it is possible that this painting is one of his early works, although the use of "ae" instead of an umlauted "a" in the signature seems unlikely for a painting executed in Germany.
