Note: | 1. The verso inscription in pencil is in a script hand that is typical of 19th century penmanship. It resembles the hand found on the stretcher bars of several other Schafer paintings. 2. A painting with this title appeared in the North Pacific Industrial Exposition, October 1890, as reported in the (Portland, Oregon) Morning Oregonian of 16 October 1890 but the information in that source is insufficient to either include or exclude the possibility that it is this painting. |
Legend: | Said to have been in the family since the 1920s and perhaps earlier. |
