Medium: | oil on canvas |
Size: | est. 30 x 20 in. |
Description: | The moon is barely visible through a mostly cloudy sky. A river flows gently through a forest of tall conifers toward the front of the painting, where it ripples past several large and small boulders, reflecting the moonlight and occupying the entire width of the painting. On the right bank a downed snag lies pointing out over the river, and the forest includes three standing and leaning snags. On the left a snag lies on the slope down to the river. Both sides of the river are thickly brush-covered. (From a color photograph.) |
Note: | 1. The only information available is a snapshot of unknown origin. The size is estimated from the chair on which the painting is resting. 2. Paintings with this title have appeared in at least three 19th century auction catalogs but without enough information to either include or exclude the possibility that one of them is this painting.
