Date: | 1887 |
Medium: | oil on canvas |
Size: | 50 x 70 in (127 x 178 cm) |
Inscription: | "F.Schafer. S.F. 1887" The letter "c" is very light. |
Verso: | "Mt. Hood / from the Dalles." in black brush block print in the artist's characteristic hand. In a lighter, possible afterthought, the word "Oregon", again in the artist's characteristic hand, has been added to the right and slightly above the words "Mt. Hood", and a third line reads "F. Schàfer, 1887." |
Provenance: | In the collection of Chicago Athletic Association by 2007; sold 12 December 2007 for $9000 (hammer) by Leslie Hindman Auctioneers as lot 386 in sale 70 to collection of Ron M. Werner, Portland, Oregon. |
Reproductions: | 12 December 2007 sale catalog 70, lot 386 (color) |
Citations: | Personal communication with the owner, 2007 |
Site: | A view of Mount Hood from along The Dalles, a gorge along the Columbia River. |
Note: | 1. After several years of being listed in San Francisco city directories, 1887 is the first year that Schafer was listed in the Alameda directory. The inscription "S.F." on this painting indicates that he continued to consider himself a San Francisco artist, at least for a short time. 2. It is likely that this painting was one that appeared in Schafer's 1888 Chicago exhibition of 157 paintings, as reported in (Chicago) The Sunday Inter Ocean, June 3 and 10, 1888. |
Identification: | Title from verso inscription. The Leslie Hindman Auctioneers sale catalog mistakenly identifies the artist as "Friedrich Schaffer (Austrian, 1825-1902)" and gives the title simply as "Mount Hood". |
