Attribution: | Despite being signed in a hand often found on Schafer's oil sketches, this painting is unusual in its rough drafting and lack of finish. Based on appearance alone one would be unlikely to suggest it was painted by Schafer. It is also surprising that the stretcher bars bear the stamp of a Boston art shop. A conservative position would thus be to exclude the painting. On the other hand, the overall composition and attention to illumination do suggest that Schafer might be the artist and the unusual features might be because it is just a sketch. The attribution of this painting thus remains an open question. |
Site: | Appears to be a view of Mount Shasta from somewhere near Castle Lake. It has also been suggested that the mountain might be Mount Baker in western Washington. |
Identification: | Assigned, descriptive title, based on paintings of the same scene that were titled by the artist. |
