Site: | Blue Canyon is located in Placer County, California, near Emigrant Gap. It was at one time known by the Spanish name "Blue CaƱon" and often spelled simply "Blue Canon". See also Blue Canyon, Sierra Nevada Mountains, view from Cape Horn, which may have a similar spelling in its title inscription. |
Note: | (1) This is one of three paintings said to "have been in our family for a number of years." (2) A painting with the title Blue Canyon, Sierra Nevada Mountains appeared as lot 8 in the catalog of a May 1886 exhibition and auction sale in Salt Lake City, Utah Territory, but the information in that listing is insufficient to either include or exclude the possibility that it is the same painting. |
Identification: | Title (with modern spelling) from the verso inscription. That inscription may have been copied from an older inscription by the artist on the back of the canvas before lining. |
