[photo] [Mount Shasta (?)]

Date: may be 1881
Medium: Oil on canvas laid to panel
Size: 20 x 36 in
Inscription: Signed and dated l/r: "F.Schafer / ** " in a block-printing hand similar to that of the artist's sketch hand. The two unreadable letters may be the date "81",
Verso: The back of canvas is covered with a wood panel bearing labels of Wallace Gallery, East Hampton, New York, and a brief bio of the artist. At the bottom right corner of the bio label is a partially obscured price tag that reads "$4,000".
Provenance: In inventory of Wallace Gallery, #052314 (unknown dates). Sold 24 August 2024 for $8125 by Thomaston Place Auction Galleries, Thomaston, Maine, as lot 2211 in "Summer Grandeur 2024 – Day 2" sale.
Reproductions: Thomaston Place Auction Galleries on-line sale catalog
Site: Unidentified, despite title. See Note.
Note: The profile of the snow-capped stratovolcano does not resemble that of Mount Shasta, which is neither so isolated nor so steep-sided, and which from most viewpoints has a prominent secondary cone. The volcano may be Mount Adams, Mount St. Helens, or possibly Mount Rainier. So far, only one other Schafer painting has emerged of this volcano, also titled inappropriately, Mount Hood (?).
Identification: Title (with question mark added) of unknown source from Wallace Gallery label
Other title(s): [Indian Encampment at the Foot of Mount Shasta] (Thomaston Place Auction Galleries catalog)
In index(es): Title list, Indian encampments as incidental subjects, Mount Shasta and Shastina, unidentified mountain scenes, dated paintings
