| Attribution: | The pastoral subject is typical for Frederick F. Schafer, but the appearance of the painting is somewhat abstract with broad brushstrokes, the palette is biased toward the yellow, the entire painting is uniformly illuminated, there is a lack of shadows, and the trees are just sketched in, all of which features are atypical. In addition, no paintings signed "F.S." and clearly in the style of Schafer have turned up. It seems more likely that this painting is by another artist who shares the initials, possibly Fred Swanwell.
