Date: probably undated
Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 20 x 36 in (51 x 92 cm)
Inscription: l/r "F Schafer", in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand
Verso: said to be "North Head of Golden Gate"
Provenance: In private collection, Denver "around 1891"; by descent to private collection, Denver, in 1969.
Reproductions: William K. Dick photo #83 (color, 1972); Alameda Free Library Clipping File photo(color, c. 1969)
Site: A view out to the open ocean from the North side of the Golden Gate, near San Francisco, California.
Description: Large swells from the sea at the left break against a red rock cliff at the right. Below the cliff are several smaller, jagged rocks; the mast of a wrecked ship lies at an angle below the cliff and other pieces of the wreck have washed in among the rocks. Behind the cliff to the right is a more distant, higher cliff; a seagull is silhouetted against the blue sky above the cliffs. To the left, a two-masted steamship sails along the horizon under a layer of orange clouds. (From a color photograph.)
Note: This painting and South Head of Golden Gate appear to be pendants.
Legend: The Denver, Colorado, owner is said to have met Schafer in person and acquired this painting, along with six others by the artist, on a honeymoon trip to California around 1891.
Identification: Both photographs are of the same Denver collection. The Alameda Library photograph, supplied by the current owner, is labeled simply North Head.
In index(es): Title list, coastal and marine scenes, sunset scenes
