Site: Looking out at the open ocean from the South side of the Golden Gate, near San Francisco, California.
Description: White surf from the ocean on the right breaks against a large brown rock head at the left; smaller brown rocks lie in the water below the head and in the lower right corner. Behind and above the head is a grey cliff; on the blue ocean horizon are a sailboat and a two-masted steamship sailing to the right. The sky is a very bright, whitish blue with layers of distant clouds and a bit of orange near the center. (From a color photograph.) Note; This painting and North Head of Golden Gate appear to be pendants.
Legend: The Denver, Colorado, owner is said to have met Schafer in person and acquired this painting, along with six others by the artist, on a honeymoon trip to California around 1891.
Identification: Both photographs are of the same Denver collection. The Alameda Library photograph, supplied by the current owner, is labeled South Head.
