Each of these paintings appears to be signed by Frederick Ferdinand Schafer, or for some other reason has been suggested to be attributable to Schafer, but each also has one or more characteristics that has led to a question about this attribution. Since in many cases the paintings are known only by a photograph, it is not possible to make any strong judgment, and despite the questions some of these paintings may well be by Schafer, particularly the first five. In most cases, the description of the painting explains the possible concerns. [All but the first five of these paintings are omitted from the grand tour of paintings by Schafer and from the title and subject indexes.]
