A number of small and medium sized, roughly-sketched oils are known. These appear to be sketches made in the field, perhaps later used in the studio as reminders of the original scene. Many of these sketches bear a signature that, while not in a cursive script, is in a much more rounded hand than found on the studio paintings. Whether this is the hand of the artist, his son Otto, or some other person is open to question. (This list should be considered tentative, since the judgment that a small painting is a sketch is subjective.)
