Description: | Swells from a blue ocean surround a brown rock island in the center and wash against the beach at the viewer's feet. At the lower left corner driftwood is trapped on a brown rock, while a log washes in the waves at the right. In the middle distance, brown rocky points surround the water from both sides; yet farther back the bay is surrounded with low hills. The sky is cloudy; a large flock of gulls is in the air just beyond the brown rock island. (From a color photograph.) |
Note: | The suggested date for the painting is based on reports of an 1886 trip to the Los Angeles area to sketch and sell paintings. |
Legend: | The Denver, Colorado, owner is said to have met Schafer in person and acquired this painting, along with six others by the artist, on a honeymoon trip to California around 1891. |
Identification: | Both photographs are of the same Denver collection. A note with the Alameda Library photograph gives the size as 29.5 x 44 in. |
