[photo] Bear Lake in the Wasatch Mountains, Utah [1]
Photo credit: Early California and Western Art Research, 1985
Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 30 x 50 in (76 x 127 cm)
Inscription: l/l "F. Schafer", in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand
Provenance: Sold 25 April 1985 for $3025 by Butterfield & Butterfield, San Francisco, as lot 2325 in sale 3534C. Sold 31 March 1993 for $4888 by Sotheby Arcade, New York, as lot 186 in sale 1426.
Reproductions: Butterfield & Butterfield 25 April 1985 sale catalog, Early California and Western Art Research/Schafer slide #73 (color, 1985), Sotheby Arcade 31 March 1993 sale catalog.
Site: Unidentified, but because the bright mountain on the left seems to include the geologic feature known as Devil's Slide, may be in the Weber Canyon, about 30 miles east of Ogden, Utah. If so, the painting is probably a composite, because below Devil's Slide is the Weber River rather than a lake.
Description: A view across a lake toward a dark mountain, which contrasts strongly with a bright, light, lower mountain on the left. A few conifers are on the left bank of the lake, while the right bank of lake is heavily forested. There are three tepees on the far, right bank, with smoke from a fire within. On a point extending out on the left side of the lake, two figures of Indians stand on the shore beside a canoe with three figures in it. (From a color photograph.)
Note: (1) If not a composite, The lake may be a wide, slow-moving section of the Weber River looking west. (2) Schafer painted this scene several times from slightly different vantage points. See the list of Wasatch Mountains.
Identification: Descriptive title as found in the 1985 Butterfield & Butterfield sale catalog. Based on the similarity to Bear Lake in the Wasatch Mountains, Utah [2] it is likely that the title comes from an unmentioned verso inscription.
