Provenance: | With Garzoli Gallery, San Francisco, in 1980. |
Reproductions: | William K. Dick photo #154 (color, 1980) |
Site: | A view to the West, down Yosemite Valley, California, with El Capitan on the right and the Merced River in the center. |
Description: | The purplish-grey face of El Capitan fills the right half of the painting, with a more distant cliff immediately to its left almost lost in haze and the cloudy sky. On the left of the river a grove of conifers climbs in a triangle; on the right bank two trees stand above a background of yellow brush. The water is calm and it provides an indistinct reflection of the base of El Capitan and of the trees on both sides. The colors are mostly greys, brownish-greens, and yellows. (From a color photograph.) |
Note: | Although this view was popular with landscape photographers, there being prints by C. L. Weed, C. E. Watkins, and E. Muybridge, this painting is distinctly different from the currently available published photographs. [Naef, Weston J., Era of Exploration, figures 43, 44, 45, and 99.] |
