Description: | An evening landscape of a flat, forested, river valley executed almost entirely in shades of grey. The top and left of the sky is darkly cloudy, while the lower right sky is lighter and the lower center sky very bright. The river enters in the distance in the center, negotiates several bends, and finally fills the entire front of the painting; in the area near the viewer, rocks combine to form small islands. On the opposite bank, to the left, a grove of broadleaf trees stands among boulders, silhouetted against the brighter part of the sky. On the right, in the distance, three trees extend into the sky well above the rest of the forest; a fourth is not quite so tall. (From a color photograph.) |
