[photo] Spring on Alameda Point

Date: probably undated
Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 24 x 16 in (61 x 41 cm)
Inscription: l/r "F. Schafer", umlaut or circumflex above the "a", What appears to be a very straight underline beneath the signature is actually a line extending across the entire width of the painting.
Verso: said to be "Spring on Alameda Point" (see Note)
Provenance: In private collection by 1971. Offerd 20 January 2008 (not sold) by Bonhams & Butterfields, Los Angeles, as lot 7081 in sale 15873; sold 20 April 2008 for $375 by Bonhams & Butterfields, Los Angeles, as lot 7075 in sale 16074.
Reproductions: William K. Dick photo #125 (color, 1971); Bonhams & Butterfields 20 January 2008 and 20 April 2008 sale catalogs (color).
Description: A view through a stand of tall flowers, over a slough, and then across a green field on which stand four cows (?) against brown shrubbery in the distance; a grey hill rises to the right to form a backdrop. A bushy tree fills the right edge and divides a grey skey at the top from a bluer but still cloudy sky below. (From a color photograph.)
Note: The 20 January 2008 sale catalog and the 20 April 2008 sale catalog both report "titled and inscribed 'California' on the reverse". This report may indicate that the verso inscription is actually "Spring on Alameda Point, California".
