[photo] Utah scene [1]
Photo credit: William K. Dick, 1972
Date: probably undated
Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 12 x 18.5 in (30.5 x 47.0 cm)
Inscription: l/l "F. Scháfer", last three letters underlined
Verso: said to be "Utah Scene"
Provenance: Sold circa 1972 by Hunter Gallery, San Francisco, to private collection, San Francisco; offered in 1983 by Carlson Gallery, San Francisco.
Reproductions: William K. Dick photo #33 (color, 1972)
Site: Unidentified, though the geologic feature is so distinctive that it should be instantly recognizable by anyone familiar with the area. It somewhat resembles Angel's Landing in Zion National Park, Utah.
Description: Three figures on brown horses and wearing white hats stand in a green and yellow meadow in the right middle. Beyond the meadow on the right is a small stand of trees, then a river or lake; rising above the entire scene is a slope to the left and above that dramatic rocky layers of cliffs topped with a pinnacle. In the center and right background a snow-capped mountain ridge stands below a baby blue sky with a few fluffy clouds. In the foreground left is a grassy but shaded clearing with a large boulder and at the left edge a rocky rise. Two tall conifers stand out agains the background cliff, the smaller one aligned directly below the pinnacle. (From a color photograph.)
