Site: | View East into Yosemite Valley, California, from atop the Topinemete bluffs along the old Mariposa trail, probably at Inspiration point, with El Capitan to the left and Cathedral Rocks and Bridalveil Fall on the right. The vantage point is slightly higher than that of [Yosemite Valley 2] and slightly farther South. |
Description: | A dirt road comes from the right; on the road is a lone rider wearing a red shirt. Cathedral Rocks on the right above the fall are spaced like sawteeth on the diagonal of the painting. El Capitan looms grey against the sky, and the distant cliffs are very hazy, contrasting with the very colorful foreground which is filled with bright breens and, on the right, wildflowers. There are two lone conifers on the right edge, and a small fallen tree nearby on the right visually crosses the dirt road to almost meet the base of the waterfall. Beyond the path is a row of small boulders. (From a color photograph.) |
Identification: | Title from reported verso inscription. In the Jim Fowler's Period Gallery West 1983 sale catalog, the artist is listed as "Schaeffer". |
