Note: | (1) There is no evidence that Schafer ever actually visited Brazil. This painting is probably a composite based on a local river and photographs or sketches of South American locales, perhaps a painting done for a commission. (2) Although none of the sale catalogs describe the painting as lined, the clean, white appearance of the back, the neatly trimmed edges and folded corners at the edge of the stretcher bars, and what appear to be edges of the original canvas in the verso photograph suggest that it has been lined. If so, the verso inscription may have been transcribed from an the original canvas at the time of lining. |
