Photo credit: Courtesy of Christopher Queen Galleries, Duncans Mills, California (2006)
Medium: watercolor and gouache on paper
Size: 9.5 x 13.25 in (24 x 34 cm) sight
Inscription: l/r "Fredck.SchaFer", in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand, underlined. An ambiguous dot above the "a" may be intended as an accent mark.
Verso: none reported
Provenance: Offered 24 April 2005 (withdrawn) by Bonhams & Butterfields, San Francisco, as lot 3119 in sale 13087. Sold 6 June 2006 for $2500 (hammer) by Michaan's Auctions by the Bay, Inc., Alameda, California. Offered in 2006 by Christopher Queen Galleries, Duncans Mills, California.
Reproductions: Bonhams & Butterfields 24 April 2005 on-line catalog.
Attribution: The Bonhams & Butterfields cataloguer was apparently doubtful about the attribution. The catalog entry reads "Attributed to Frederick Ferdinand Schafer" and "bears signature 'Fredck. Schafer'" However, the painting appears typical of Schafer's watercolors, and the signature also appears to be typical, apart from the unusual abbrevation of the forename.
Identification: Title from the 2005 and 2006 auction sales. In the inventory of Christopher Queen Galleries "Sierra" is singular.
In index(es): Title list, fishing scenes, watercolor and gouache paintings
