Medium: | oil on canvas |
Size: | 50 x 30 inches (121 x 76 cm) |
Inscription: | Appears to be signed l/r "FSchafer", underlined, in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand, but missing flakes of paint leave many of the letters only partial. |
Verso: | "on upper Sacramento Riv. / California." in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand. |
Provenance: | In private collection, Port Arthur, Texas, by descent in the family in 1979 and 1997 to a grandson, sold August 2023 to Antiek Restoration, LLC, New Orleans, Louisiana. |
Attribution: | Much of the signature has been lost but the individual letter fragments that remain have the same characteristic structure as Schafer's usual signature. Further confirmation is apparent in the characteristic block-letter hand of the verso inscription. Morover, the overall composition, palette, and style of the painting, with botanically accurate trees, forest debris including a snag on the right bank of the river, natural-appearing water without mirroring, and the somewhat awkward-appearing deer are all typical of Schafer's work. |
Legend: | Said to have been in the family for over 50 years. |
Identification: | Title from the artist's verso inscription. |
