Site: | The Pacific Ocean, looking South towards Cypress Point, near Monterey, California. |
Description: | A large coastal rock formation with a cypress tree on the top stands in the center middle distance with the ocean at the right. In the foreground the bank slopes up to the left with a stand of two Monterey Cypress trees in the center against the sky; two dead, standing snags are also part of the stand. Behind them to the left is a smaller cypress tree. Behind the trees stone cliffs lead out to the main point, distant hazy cliffs beyond the point continue all along the horizon. Surf turns the greenish-blue ocean to white along the beach. The lower half of the sky is filled with white clouds; it is blue above, but darker clouds appear at the left. Three or four white gulls are silhouetted in flight against the bluish distant mountains. (From a color photograph.) |
Note: | A painting with a similar title was exhibited in the Mechanics' Institute Nineteenth Industrial Exhibition in 1884 but there is not enough information in the catalog to either include or exclude the possibility that it is the same painting. |
Identification: | The title comes from the WIM Fine Arts photograph. The Butterfield & Butterfield sale catalog adds the word California to the end of the title. The Early California and Western Art Research index indicates that the title is on the back, but doesn't indicate whether it is inscribed or is simply an exhibition label. The alternate title was used by Maxwell Galleries, Ltd.. |
Other title(s): | Along the Coast, Monterey, California |
