Site: | Mount Shasta, California, viewed through a valley from the South, above a lake or river. Shastina stands on the left. |
Description: | Clouds gather above Shastina, while cloudy sky stands above snow-capped Mount Shasta in the center. On a path to the left of the water three riders in Indian garb and headdress face into the painting. The lower left triangle of dark forest, cliff, and rocky river bank contrasts with the bright sky and mountain. The sky has a misty morning appearance; the sun comes from the right (East). At the left in the foreground are two standing, white-trunked dead trees as well as several fallen trees. To the right of the path are two boulders in shadow and surrounded by wildflowers. The foreground is largely done in shades of green; the background in shades of pastel beige and blue. (From the painting, 19 July 1990.) |
