Site: | Mount Shasta, California, viewed through a valley from the Southwest, above the Sacramento river. |
Description: | Snow-capped Mount Shasta is to the right, with Shastina at the center, and a high rock promontory stands near the left edge. It is late afternoon or early evening, with the sun off the canvas to the left. Near the center of the scene, on a trail leading along a river, is an Indian on horseback pulling a travois; following the rider around a bend on the trail are two figures on foot. The river enters at the center right, comes directly toward the viewer over a small fall, and then leaves at the front right. The bright yellow-orange left bank is covered with rocks and debris. Here and there are trees, with two tall enough to be silhouetted against the greyish-blue sky. In the immediate foreground lie two downed snags in front of a field of boulders; another snag lies a bit farther away, and beyond that a grey snag hanags out over the river. (From the painting, 21 July 1998.) |
