Description: | A calm lake is on the left, with a range of brownish-gray mountains in the background, behind which a snow-covered ridge peeks out on the right. At the edge of the water are three figures, one seated in a canoe, one standing and one sitting on the shore, wearing white, red, and white shirts, respectively. On the bank there appears to be smoke from a campfire. Behind the canoe, on the right, is a conifer forest beyond a grassy clearing; two snags stand prominently at the edge of the forest, one white, one grey; there are several more downed snags at the edge of the clearing. Rocks and grasses are visible in the shallow water near the shore (From a color photograph.) |
Note: | 1. The picture is quite similar in composition to Morning on Lake Tahoe from Tahoe City and Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe in the Sierras. 2. Two paintings with this title (though omitting the word "California") were offered as lots 193 and 199 on page 11 in the catalog of a 17 November 1885 auction in San Francisco but there is not enough information in that catalog to either include or exclude the possibility that one of them is this painting. |
