What's new: Site and catalog status as of August 2024

Status

There is also a list of nearly 400 painting titles that have been found in nineteenth century title-only auction catalogs or newspaper clippings. Any of the paintings in that list may already be in the catalog but without more information, matching them is problematic. Finally, added for comparison are records of several paintings by other artists who have been or sometimes are confused with Frederick Schafer and 48 paintings sampled from a larger universe of paintings whose claimed attribution to Schafer can be questioned.

Images are included for all but 19 of the documented paintings. Some of those missing images are in hand but are not currently posted because permission has not been granted.

  Added the title page and one interior page of an 1880 exhibition at the Walker Mansion in Oakland, California; a five-page catalog for an 1882 auction in San Francisco; four newspaper clippings including a title catalog for an 1885 auction in Victoria, British Columbia; the cover and one page from a catalog for a 1911 New York City auction; and three pages from a catalog for a 1912 San Francisco auction along with an advertisement of that auction. Based on those catalogs, added or updated 62 titles in paintings known only by title and updated the probable provenance of one of those titles, Moonlight on the Sound, Victoria.

  Updated the paragraphs about West coast travels in Travels of the artist with information and perspectives from the added newspaper clippings.

• February 2017. Changes to both content and format.
  Content: Added a photograph of the artist to the home page and to Schafer's background and training together with the photograph of his purported easel. Added 75 titles from the May 1886 catalog of an exhibition and sale in Salt Lake City, Utah Territory. Revised the text of About the artist (the art history pages) to incorporate recent discoveries. Added a legend to Legends and myths about Schafer. Updated the Copyright Notice to account for recent changes in copyright law and learning of paintings in the hands of the artist's heirs. Revised description of Mount Hood [from Hood River, Oregon 8] in light of additional information and photographs, including daylight/UV comparison images of the signature and a better verso inscription image. Revised Signature inscriptions to include a signature that omits the first initial.   Format: Minor modernization of the design and format of much of the web site for improved readability, navigation, and conformance with newer web standards. Clicking on an image now always leads to a larger version of that image, if one is available. Redesigned the page of Lists and indexes and the title index for ease of use. Titles starting with "A" or "The" are now properly alphabetized. Moved paintings known only by title out of the general catalog into in a separate list and added links to any available images of each title source. Reduced the number of footnotes by replacing citations of 19th century newspaper clippings with links to the images of those clippings. Renamed the "mechanics" section to Documentation conventions and added a page of Abbreviations used in the catalog. Added lists of handled paintings to the citations of Art Galleries and Dealers.

• September 2016. Added images of a May 1886 catalog of an exhibition and sale in Salt Lake City, Utah Territory.

  Added about 100 images of newspaper clippings recently located by James Marquardt and about 50 images scanned from newspaper clippings accumulated earlier. Specific clippings of interest include a series of ten reports and advertisements of an auction sale in San Francisco of paintings exhibited at the 1884 Mechanics' Fair; a series of eight reports of a visit to Los Angeles in February 1886; a series of seven reports of the already mentioned catalog sale in Salt Lake City, Utah Territory, in May 1886; a series of six reports of a visit to Seattle, Washington, in May 1890; a series of six reports of a visit to Santa Cruz, California, in May 1891; a series of five reports of a visit to Vancouver, British Columbia, in September 1891; a series of six reports of a visit to Ogden, Utah Territory, in November 1891; and a series of eleven reports of a visit to Salt Lake City, Utah Territory, in December 1891; each saying that he planned to exhibit and sell paintings, and in some cases to open a teaching studio.

  Links to all of the added clippings can be found in Newspaper mentions. There is now a link to an original image for all but a few clippings cited on that page dated through 1923. (Images of clippings later than 1923 are not included because they are still under copyright.)

  Rearranged auction sale citations into two lists, All auction sales and Primary painting sales (those for which the consigner was the artist).

  Began identifying paintings known only by title in anticipation of making them a separate category.

  Made several changes to the text based on the added newspaper clippings: Made a major revision in the 1885 to 1891 paragraphs of Travels of the artist. Expanded the descriptions of Primary painting sales in Seattle, Santa Cruz, Vancouver, Ogden, and Salt Lake City. Updated Schafer's background and training with newspaper citations verifying that Schafer painted theatre scenery and advertised classes in painting. Expanded 1 in Comments by others about the work of Frederick F. Schafer to alert reader to be wary of newspaper reviews that may be based on press releases.

• July 2016. Revised the form for provenance information of newly-added and updated paintings to follow current recommendations of best practices by the Kress Foundation, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Getty. The significant changes are to include more detailed information about ownership transfers and to place that detail between the prior and next owner records.
